(Detailed Curriculum Vitae Below)

Mark Allen Young, MD, MBA, FACP, is a board-certified specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) and is a licensed acupuncturist. His sub-specialty interest is pain management.

Dr. Young graduated from the Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School in 1987. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Chicago, in 1988. After completing a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in 1991, he was recruited to the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. From 1994 through 1997 he served as director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Consult Inpatient Service. As assistant director of residency training for the Johns Hopkins component of the Sinai-Johns Hopkins Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency, Dr. Young was the elected recipient of the Golden Goniometer Award for excellence in teaching. He is currently an active member of the American Society of Pain and a past president of the Maryland State Society of PM & R.

Internationally known, Dr. Young is the author of over 70 publications relating to Rehabilitation Medicine and has co-authored three rehabilitation textbooks, including the award-winning PMR Secrets, which has been translated into multiple foreign languages and garnered global acclaim. Dr. Young's publications have appeared in a diverse and prestigious array of medical and lay journals, including Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), New England Journal of Medicine and The New York Times.

Recognized for his research and scholarly contributions to medicine in academic circles throughout the world, Dr. Young has lectured extensively on rehabilitation topics in this country and abroad. He has been the invited participant in multiple scientific symposia and conferences all over the world, including Israel, Turkey, Sweden and Spain. This summer, Dr. Young was invited to speak in Australia and Greece. In addition to his experience speaking to professionals, Dr. Young is comfortable with lay audiences and has been interviewed for newspapers, television and radio.

Dr. Young's early research during the late 1980s focused on hormonal factors, gender, and heart disease and bone fracture risk. He and his collaborators were among the first to describe and publish their observations that an age related decline in a man's testosterone can result in heightened bone fracture risk as well as increased risk of heart disease. Widely interpreted as a form of "male menopause" the unique phenomenon described by Dr. Young and colleagues garnered extensive attention from the international press—television, radio and print media.

More than a decade later, this discovery has been substantiated by other leading researchers and cited extensively within medical and endocrinology literature. A recent review of "Citation Index," a medical library tool used to track important research papers that have been quoted in the medical literature revealed a large number of "hits" for Dr. Young's work.

Dr. Young currently serves as Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Maryland Rehabilitation Center. He is presently Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Practical Pain Management. Dr. Young also has an active role in the training and education of residents and medical students, frequently lecturing on complementary medicine and pain management.
